2001: A Crashed Odyssey?
2001! How long we'd awaited that year -- the beginning of a new century, and a new millenium. Back in the Twentieth Century (how strange, still, it sounds to say that), great scientific discoveries and technological achievements were being made, and the rate at which they were being made was ever accellerating. We looked forward to the year AD 2001 as a benchmark of world civilization and human achievement, and among... (posted by Wilfred 154 days 2 hours ago.)

Object-Oriented Design/Programming -- How We Objectify in Our Culture
What a title. Well, is this a technical article, or isn't it? It's a view of culture, psychology, and their influence on technology. If this matter has been addressed before, it wasn't in any of the articles that came to my attention at this writing. Object-Oriented design in software development has been a convenience, a problem solver, a boon that makes a wide range of... (posted by Wilfred 4 years 95 days ago.)

Phantom Dialogs: A Sound Programming Practice?
Early in my career I wrote mainframe Batch and Online programs for the Massachusetts Office of Management Information Systems (OMIS); it was there that I first encountered a " phantom panel. " While working on a Welfare "Fraud Squad" application written in DMS (Development Management System, an Online language that runs within IBM's CICS), I discovered a phantom panel written by one of my predecessors, Phil... Some Thoughts on Random Number Generation
Suppose we wanted to select a number at random, say, from an interval of 1 to 27 inclusive. How could we go about it in a computer program? For some languages it's surprisingly easy; tools for random number selection exist in these languages. If we wanted to "pick a card" from 1 to 27 in BASIC, or rather the DOS-based variant QBASIC, we would use RANDOMIZE TIMER LET NRANDOM = INT(RND * 27) + 1 Since QBASIC is a...
